Community Centre For Whakatane Is Discussed By W.C.A.

A report from a sub-committee set up at an earlier meeting to inquire into establishing a Community Centre in the borough was received at a meeting of the committee of the Whakatane Citizens’ Association.

Details were given of a representative meeting held in 1946 to discuss a War Memorial and which favoured a Community Centre as a' memorial. This meeting still stands adjourned. A later meeting of women also favoured a Community Centre but so far no further progress has been made.

Miss L. M. Lawes gave a very interesting description of her experience at the Feilding Community Centre. Her account was supported by some literature on the subject from several countries where the Community Centre scheme had met with outstanding successes. The Dargaville scheme was also studied.
