Precautions Will Be Taken Of Pollution Of Rangitaiki River
Every possible precaution will be r taken, the State Forest Service advised the Bay of Plenty Sub-Pro-vince of Federated Farmers. This reply came following a letter, from the Federation pointing out the possible consequences of effluent ' from the proposed Murupara pulp and paper mills being released into the Rangitaiki River. The reply outlined the precautions taken to eliminate a high percentage of chemical and fibrous
bodies from the effluent and ex- , pressed the opinion that the turbulence .and great flow of the river at the point of release would nullify the effects on the water. The State Forest Service assured • the federation that if the effluent was not solved to a reasonable degree it would not hesitate to advise the Government to desist. Mr G. G. King (Rangitaiki) said that the Rangitaiki River, at the
present time, was heavily charged with chemical or mineral content „ and he felt that it only needed a s. little more to cause trouble. He considered that in the event of major difficulties being encountered, arrangements should be made to make available an alternative water supply.
