LEGION TO PROMOTE NEW SCHOOL LIBRARY
Arrangements to start a library at the Whakatane Primary School are now being made by the Whakatane Legion of Frontiersmen. It is planned to hold a drive in the town when every house in the borough will be visited and the residents asked to donate at least one book suitable for children between the ages of eight and 14 years of age.
The plan was suggested at the last meeting of the Legion by Mr C. R. Coates and was enthusiastically supported. He told the meeting that at present the school did not have a library—and 'this was something that was badly needed. Mr Coates said that much of the cheap pulp type of reading now common to most youngsters was having a bad effect. He claimed that a good school library would be a strong beneficial counter. A committee was formed and it was.decided to hold the drive on July 22.
