CENTRAL BAY BEATS PIAKO IN POURING RAIN Despite pouring rain and a ground in which the mud was almost ankle deep Central Bay of Plenty put on a scintillating display to defeat Piako by two goals to one in a representative hockey game played at Edgecumbe- on Saturday. It was one of the best games yet played in the district and the Bay’s win was all the more creditable as it is the first win yet registered by the Central Bay Association since it was reformed, against an older association.
In a women’s game atrocious conditions again hindered play and ended with Central Bay of Plenty 3, Piako 3. WOMEN’S TEAMS DRAW In the women’s match both sets of forwards combined well but the Bay team was unfortunate in the early part of the game to miss several open shots at goal. This was caused by the heavy ground, which kept the ball from travelling. backs were evenly matched. The final score, a three-all draw, was a good indication of the game. For the Bay M. Thompson netted twice and Hotene once; M. Burr scored all three points for Piako. PLAYED AT FAST PACE Starting at an exceptionally fast pace both men’s teams went, hard for the greater part of the first half with the Bay having the edge on Piako. The speed of the forwards contributed a lot towards this. The half lines were fairly even but the Bay full backs were slightly better, Piako having a weak link in one of their full backs. In the second half neither team gave anything and the match ended with the half-time score still standing, Central Bay of Plenty 2, Piako 1. For the Bay Civil and Dodunski scored and Marwood scored for Piako.
