EAR, NOSE, THROAT SPECIALIST WILL BENEFIT HOSPITAL

Residents who look to the Whakatane District Hospital for medical treatment will benefit by the specialist appointment of an ear, nose and throat consultant by the Cook. Hospital Board, Gisborne The specialist is Dr Albert E. Khan, Sydney, and he will take up his appointment at an early date. Dr Khan will join other specialists at present employed by the Cook Hospital Beard, who are giving specialised treatment to patients on the East Coast and to the Whakatane and Opotiki Hospitals. This is part of a scheme inaugurated by East Coast and eastern Bay of Plenty hospital boards to give patients in the various areas-spec-ialist treatment without having to travel long distances to the larger centres.

Prior to the scheme anyone from Whakatane requiring specialist treatment had to travel either to

Hamilton or Auckland. There is no need for this now. The different ■L specialists working from Gisborne ' will visit Whakatane every month and dispense their specialised treatment. f Each hospital in the scheme is required to pay a portion of the cost but it is considered that the benefit derived from the scheme far outweighs the charge. Studied in England Dr Khan is a married man and graduated in 1936, with honours, from Sydney University. He laterstudied in England and gained the qualifications of D.L.0., R.C.P., and S., in 1945, and F.R.C.S.E. in 1946 He has held appointments in a number of Australian hospitals, and was - bouse surgeon of the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, London, in 1946, and part-time registrar of the ear, nose and throat department of St Mary’s Hospital, London. In 1947 he was registrar of the Royal Ear Hospital, University College Hospital, London, and x in the following year he became attached to the Sydney Hospital as honorary assistant relieving surgeon.

Dr Khan saw service with the R : .A.A.F. during the war, in the United Kingdom and Europe, and now holds honorary, appointments as assistant surgeon in the ear, nose and throat department of Sydney Hospital, and also at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Sydney. He is consultant surgeon to the R.A.A.F., and consultant to the Commonwealth Acoustic Laboratory K Sydney.

The appointment already has been approved by the Minister of Health.
