18th Birthday Of Edgecumbe W.I . Was Enjoyable Meeting
A large gathering of members and visitors celebrated the 18th birthday of the Edgecumbe Women’s Institute. The meeting was presided over by Mrs G. Irving, who welcomed the visitors.
Mrs Learning was presented with a long service badge. The drama circle was complimented on winning the cup for the drama section of the recent district drama festival. Wall competitions were won by Mrs Dippie and Mrs Wiggins, of Whakatane. Two songs were sung by the members of the singing circle and a delightful solo sung by Mrs S. Spence. The drama circle entertained with a humorous sketch. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the committee after which the birthday cake, which had been made and iced by Mrs A. Black, was brought to the fore. Candles were lighted by Mrs Robb, Thornton, while Mrjs Herbison, Whakatane, blew them out. The cake was then cut Ly Mrs Logan, Manawahe.
Monthly competitions:— Soft toy, Mrs Gibson 1, Mrs Watson 2, Mrs Blair 3; chocolate cake, Mrs Sim 1, Mrs Pearse 2, Mrs Black 3; flowers, Mrs Tunnicliffe 1, Mrs D. Spence 2, Mrs Learning 3; best flower, Mrs Black 1, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Watson, Mrs Goldsmith 2 equal; calendula, Mrs Bake 1, Mrs Learning 2; bottled tomatoes, Mrs Crang 1; vegetable, Mrs Black 1.
