Memorial Dining Hall To Maori Btn . Opened At Ruatoki

“I declare open in the name of the Maori boys who laid down their lives for their King and Country this beautiful dining hall.” With these words Lieutenant Colonel Awatere opened the new Hinewai Memorial dining hall at Ohotu Pa, Ruatoki, on Friday. The results of many months of hard work the hall is built in true Maori style with some fine example of Maori carving. Colonel Awatere was welcomed by tribal leaders and reference to his outstanding war record was made by Mr T. Tamarau. Other speakers were Messrs M. Pokaiy chief of Ohotu Pa, W. Trainor and R. Natana.

The hall was opened by Colonel Awatere in place of Sir Apirana Ngata, who was unable to be present.
