Public Library Now Being Renovated Before Re-opening

Work of renovating the Whakatane Public Library before it is reopened under the Country Library Service next month is proceeding steadily. Both the old reading room and the room used by the former library" are being prepared and each will house a greatly increased number of books.

Extra shelves and cupboards are bdng constructed while the walls are being repainted. The rooms are on either side of the entrance to the borough chambers and windows have been built in the passage walls so that it is now possible to see into the library from the entrance.

All the books are now being catalogued and prepared for rein*.ue. In addition more books, mostly of non-fiction will be available through the country library service. At present there are still a number of books out with subaclibers to the previous library service and these books are being called back so that they can be catalogued and repaired. They must be in by Wednesday. Although no date has been announced for the opening of the library it is expected that it will be ea’lv next month.
