COUNTY ROADS AT PRESENT UNCLASSIFIED

No roads in the Whakatane County at the present time are classified and they will remain unclassified until the new road classifications arranged by the =,Whakatane County Council are approved by the Minister of Transport. Classification of roads throughout New Zealand under the 1940 Heavy Motor Vehicle Regulations ended about a fortnight. *• In the Whakatane County loads on roads are at present limited only by the Transport Act. This fixes a maximum gross load of 10 tons for a two-axled vehicle, and a maximum axle-load of six tons for a multi-axled vehicle. These are higher than the limits on classified roads under the old regulations. Throughout the reclassification of Whakatane roads the tendency has been a rise in classification although a number of 'roads will remain as they are. This means that roads unclassified under the old regulations will become class 1, for class 111 roads to become class 11, and for class IV roads to become class 111. Loads limit will in many cases increase. Where class 111 roads become class ll,' for instance, the axle-load limit for two-axled vehicles will increase -'feyn 54 tons to 64 tons, and for •multi-axled vehicles with widely spaced axles from five tons to six -tons.

In the new. list only nine roads have been suggested for reclassification. They include four main highways and the remainder county roads. The main, highways previously class 111 have been amended to class 11. They are: ThorntonEdgecumbe, Awakeri-Edgecumbe-Te Teko, Whakatane-Station. . The Whakatane-Ohope-Kutarere highway has been amended from class IV to class 111. The five county roads suggested to be changed, have been amended from class IV to class 111 in each case. They are: Waimana Township, Ruddick’s Road, TaneatuaRttatoki, East Bank North Road, Western Drain Road.
