Ten Aces Mrs H. M. Newman and Mr W. Howat were the winners of the weekly card evening of the Whakatane Bowling Club held last week after cutting six times with Mr J. Hanright. Both cut for first prize and each cut five aces in succession before the run of aces ceased and the luck went to Mr Howat. Prizes were won by Mrs C. Loane and Mr J. D. Churton.

The Heads Popular The Whakatane Heads is becoming increasingly popular on Sunday afternoons with many people. Yesterday a number of people drove to the parking area and passed the greater part of the afternoon beside the sea while children played on the sand. The more agile ones tramped over the rocks round Kohi Point. A few hopefuls had a fishing line, played cut. > Start On Fences Although about ten houses have been completed in the Tuhoe / venue State house block, Whakatane, for a number of months erection of the street fences were only started by the manufacturers last week. Fences dividing each section have been "up for some time. Residents in the area have found it hard to keep children from wondering on to the road without fences. Not All Good Although Ashing has been reported to be “good” off the Rurima Islands in the last few weeks fee same cannot be said for shore fishing. A number of people who have tried their luck off the rocks at the Whakatane Heads in the past few weeks have reported very poor catches. The same reports have came from Ohope and Ohiwa. Crayfish have been scarce lately too. Fishermen laying pots round the coast have had little luck.

An Example The large numbers worn on jersies by the Rangitaiki senior Rugby team that played Whakatane last week drew favourable comment from the spectators and other visitors. One Whakatane man suggest- < ed that it was something the Wha- ~ katane Union could well follrw while another said that such numbers should be worn by the Bay of Plenty representative teams. The numbers were certainly very easy to see. They were large and almost covered the backs of players. Beside being a guide to the press rnd radio commentators such large numbers also help spectators to , pick up the players. Most Rugby Unions have adopted the large numbers now Either red on white or black on white.
