Youth Organisations Need Community Centre Hall
One of the greatest failures at Whakatane are lack of facilities in the town for youth organisations declared Dr F. J. Appleby, when farewelled by the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade, of which he has been honorary surgeon for the last 22 years, at a function on Tuesday night. This was a great drawback to the town as few organisations had a centre where they could meet.
It was a pity, Dr Appleby continued, that no scheme had ever been started to build a large community centre hall. One was needed badly at Whakatane which, he considered, would rapidly grow into a big city. A tribute to the service given the brigade and district by Dr Appleby was paid by the superintendent T. Hurndell. He also welcomed the new brigade surgeon, Dr G. H. Maaka.
