Fire Brigade Holds Farewell Function To Dr F. J . Appleby

An enjoyable and quite informal gathering of the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade farewelled Dr F. J. Appleby, former brigade medical officer, who is soon to retire, at the brigade social rooms on Tuesday night. He was presented with a fine leather travelling bag.

Many tributes were paid to the services of Dr Appleby not only to the brigade but also to the district. Dr Appleby has been at Whakatane for 31 years and a few years ago lost the sight of one eye. He retires soon to live at Lake Rotoiti. Items were given by Mr R. H. Hauesler, Dr Appleby and fireman B. Cottrell.

Several toasts honoured during the evening were:—

The King, superintendent T. Hurndell; the late Mr T. J. Watt (former member of the United Fire Brigades’ Association), deputy-sup-erintendent B. Norman; Dr F. J. Appleby, superintendent Hurndell, Dr Appleby; Dr G. H. Maaka (future medical officer), fireman A. Head—Dr Maaka; the Press, fireman B."Watts—Mr G. K. Koea; the artists, fireman Yeoman —Mr Haeusler.
