LOCAL BODIES WANT BRIDGE SITE SELECTED
The Whakatane Borough Council and Harbour Board are to continue their efforts to have the site of the new Whakatane traffic bridge selected as soon as possible. This action is being taken in spite of assurances from the Minister of Works that it is not desirable to select a site until the new bridge is likely to be built, which will probably be in ten to 15 years time. This was revealed at the bi-monthly meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board. In a report of a meeting between representatives of the council. and board it was stated that a joint letter had been sent to the Minister pressing for an early decision on the bridge site as at present, town planning, sub-division and general development of the borough is being delayed. The Minister was also asked to consider constructing the new State highway around the ■ waterfront, the cost of which, .both oranisations would be ~ Willing to contribute to. The borough representative, Mr 11. G. Warren, said that the council was going to prove the matter the development of the borough was being delayed. The chairman, Mr W. R. Boon, "'promised the council full support.
