MANY SPORTING ATTRACTIONS ON OVER WEEK-END
Apart from the weekly competitions, which will be continued tomorrow there will be few sporting fixtures at Whakatane over the week-end, although surrounding centres appear to be well catered for. Given a fine week-end most Whakatane people will spend the greater part of their time outdoors. The annual King’s Birthday Rugby meeting between Whakatane and Rangitaiki at Te Teko should draw large crowds.
Tomorrow the main attraction in the Bay Rugby world will be the clash between Bay of Plenty and East Coast at Opotiki. As this game is a trial match to select players for the combined Bay of PlentyPoverty Bay-East Coast' team, which is to meet the British Isles at Gisborne on June 21, most players will be out to play attractive football. At Whakatane teams will continue in the weekly competitions in all grades. This will be the start of the second round. Rangitaiki Trials
At Te Teko tomorrow the Rangitaiki Union will be conducting trials to select senior A and B teams and a junior team to meet Whakalane on Monday. These trials •hould be worth seeing as the cream of the union will be in action. On Sunday morning at Whakatane the three representative teams will be in training for their games the following day. The games at Te Teko will take up most of Monday afternoon and will be the first representative fixtures for both unions.
Rugby league followers will be well catered for over the week-end. Tomorrow the competitions will be continued but on Monday a Bay of Plenty Maori team will play Waikato Maoris at Ruatoki in the Waitangi Shield series. This shield is for annual competition between Maori league centres in New Zealand.
Hockey followers will have a full week-end. Tomorrow men’s and women’s teams from the Central Bay of Plenty will play Tauranga at Tauranga in the first representative fixtures for the season. On Sunday the weekly competitions will be continued and on Monday clubs will have further competition at the King’s Birthday tournament, which is being held on the Edgecumbe Domain.
Apart from the weekly games tomorrow there will be no other basketball at Whakatane, although some followers are expected to attend the annual tournament at Tauranga on Monday. A similar position exists for the Whakatane and Gtakiri Archery Clubs. f They will hold their weekly shoots tomorrow and Sunday.
Two-Day Tournament A two-day tournament at Te Puke on Sunday and Monday will be the main feature in the golf world and will be attended by a number of Whakatane players. At the Whakatane links competition for the Clarke and Reynolds' Cups will be continued tomorrow and Monday.
Although there are np racing fixtures in the district those of main interest to Whakatane enthusiasts will be the two-day meetings tomorrow and Monday at Auckland, Napier and Wanganui.
