COUNTY RIDING ESTABLISHED OF UREWERA AREA
An extra riding to take in the Urewera Country has been established by the Whakatane County Council and the new member on the council will be a Maori. The riding will cover Ruatahuna, Waiohou, Ruatoki an the Maori lands bordering the Waimana River south of the confiscation line. This will bring the number of ridings in the county up to ten, represented by 12 councillors. The councillor representing ' the Urewera will probably be elected by the Western Tuhoe Tribal executive from nominations by the various tribal committees. The usual local body elections will not be held until the Urewera becomes a rateable area. Eight of the ridings in the county, Galatea, Matata, Omataroa, Ohope, Taneatua, Waimana, Nukuhou and Urewera will be represented by a. councillor each "while the Rangitaiki and Tarawera ridings will be represented by two councillors each.
