FULL SUPPORT FOR F.O.L. IS PLEDGED BY LOCAL UNION
Full support of the Federation of Labour was given by the*. Whakatane Branch of the Carpenters’, Drivers’ and Labourers’ Union at a special meeting last week. A large gathering considered .whether the Branch would support the Federation or the new Trades’ Union Congress, which recently broke away from the Federation,
The meeting was addressed by a representative of the Auckland Branch of the Carpenters’ Union who reported why the carpenters had supported the Waterside Workers’ Union. After a full discussion a vote was taken on the question and twothirds of those present voted support of the Federation of Labour with the remainder voting for the Trades Union Congress. Those at the meeting who supported the Federation included all the carpenters present. A different attitude was taken by the Opotiki Branch of the Union, which decided to endorse “the action of those delegates who walked out of the Federation of Labour Conference.” Full support was pledged the Trades’ Union Congress.
According to an Opotiki press report the meeting was unanimous in its decision.
The meeting also decided to protest strongly at the removal of subsidies and the resultant rise in the cost of living.
