LAND IS SUITABLE IN COUNTY FOR DEVELOPMENT

Including the Whakatane County over 200,000 acres of unimproved land in five counties in the Auckland Province have been classified by the Lands and Survey Department as suitable for immediate velopment. With this in view the department is to make a survey of the area and has already made a start in the Ptotorua-Taupo area.

The survey is being made in three stages, according to the Minister of Lands, Mr Corbett. As a result of preliminary investigation, it had been found possible to make a fairly reliable estimate of the resources in unimproved land in 11 counties. The Minister said that the survey had been taken a step further in the Whakatane, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo and Great Barrier counties and a more detailed investigation had enabled a classification of the areas for immediate or deferred development an for the type of farming for which they were most suited.

“Although it was generally thought that the majority of these unimproved areas were Crown land, in an area of about 425,000 acres covered at this stage, 165,000 acres were Crown land. The balance included 11,000 acres of Maori land and 100,000 of privately-owned land.
