Ten Young Farmers Tour Rangitaiki Dairy Factory
The Thornton Young Farmers’ Club held their monthly field day at the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company’s factory last "Wednesday morning. Ten members were conducted through both the butter factory and dried buttermilk plant by Mr J. Lennon, the second assistant. As the majority of the party had beoffi through the butter factory several times before, only ppints of main interest'and newly installed equipment received special mention.
The butter was being boxed when the party arrived. A)fter watching this operation and also that of pounding, the party went via the churns to the landing stage and canwasher. The cooler, a fairly recent addition to the pasteuring and vacreating plant, created a good deal, of interest. The compressors, electrical switch board gear and heat exchanger for boiler feed water supply were also seen. Members took the chance of viewing the fires in the two huge boilers as they passed through the boiler room on their way to the dried buttermilk plant. Drying of buttermilk by the roller process was watched while the processes were explained. Afterwards members watchgd the bagging process and tasted the powder itself. The tour was founded off by a visit to the water pumping and chlorination plant at the river where the chairman of the club, Mr M. Connolly, thanked Mr Lennon for the trouble he had gone to in showing the party around.
