Rugby Expenditure Of Manning Gates Varied Too Much
Variations in the sums expended upon manning the gates at matches played by the visiting Australian team in 1949, including the game against Bay of Plenty, were referred to at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union by the chairman of the council (Mr A. St. C. Belcher). He appreciated the different local conditions, but he appealed to unions to endeavour to keep the expenditure down as low as possible. Mr H. D. Morgan (Wellington) criticised Mr Belcher for bringing the matter up. Unions invariably kept such expenditure to a rriinimum, and if questions were to be asked they should have been directed to the unions concerned and at the time the returns were made.
In reply Mr Belcher said that he had not intended to do more than put the matter before the delegates. He had not expected to bring down a storm upon his head. When Mr R. J. Smith (Bush), who had already spoken, rose again, the chairman called him to order, and said that morning tea was ready. “Ah! The closure/’ commehted Mr Smith, amid laughter. 1 .
