The lack of development of Crown and Maori land had been a retarding factor in the growth of the Whakatane County the county clerk, Mr C. G. Lucas, said at a social gathering of councillors and wives at Whakatane this week. This had hampered the develop[ment of the district but he hoped jthat something would be done [about such lands by the new Government. . <Mr Lucas said he had seen the

district grow during his 21' years on the council. However, during •the next 21 years he wanted to see a mqre rapid development of Crown and Maori lands which, he added could be done to the benefit of the 'county.
