Like Maoris Canadian Indians Are On The Increase
Like the Maoris in New Zealand, the Indians in Canada are not a vanishing race. Their numbers have been increasing, according to census reports, and by latest count now number 125,000. Ten years ago there were 118,000 Indians in Canada.
'Most of Canada’s Indians live in western Canada, where they have fai’ms, cattle ranches, coal mines, and operate fisheries. About a quarter of Canada’s Indians live in Ontario, most of them in the northern section of the province, where they make their living mainly by hunting and trapping.
The remainder are in Quebec Province, small numbers in the Atlantic Coast provinces, and just over 5,000 in the vast Northwest Territories and Yukon.
The figures deal only with .Indians who are wards of the government, the Indians who live on reserves or vast sections, of the northland set aside for their use. Indians who have become enfranchised by legislation and live as do white Canadians, are not included. No accurate data is availably on their numbers. More and more Indians are enfranchised each year and become Canadian citizens. Educational work carried on by the Canadian Government for the benefit of the Indians is extensive.
