Heavy Rain Causes Minor Flooding In Whakatane District
Heavy rain at Whakatane on Friday and at other times during the week-end caused minor flooding in the town and in the surrounding districts. Roads were torn up in many places and turned into beds of deep mud but few proved to be impassable. At Whakatane streams rose quickly and gutters soon overflowed on to footpaths and roads On Friday night part of King Street was under water but this soon receeded. At least one shop had its floor flooded. In the town most business premises prepared for flooding during the night but the rain eased and gave run-off drains time to clear themselves. There was very little flooding in the Whakatane River.
A stream which overflowed its banks near Pikowai washed out part of the main Whakatane-Tau-ranga highway and made it almost impassable on Saturday and yesterday.'' Cars were being dragged through by tractor but even then many motorists preferred not to'go on. Some vehicles made a detour along the edge of a cliff and then proceeded for some distance on the railway line.
