Town Tip Reported By Inspector To Be In Very Bad State
The bad state of the town refuse tip which, he alleged, was in the worst state he had seen it for a considerable time was mentioned by the sanitary inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, in his report presented to the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. A large quantity of old foodstuffs had been dumped well away from any face and this had proved an attraction to rats, he stated. Mr Knights said that if there had been a man on duty at the tip that would nothave happened as the rubbish could have been dumped immediately ovre the face and covered with earth the same day. “Until there is some control the Council cannot expect much cooperation from the business people and the public.”
The chairman of the works committee, Mr H. G. Warren, said he did not think it was quite correct regarding the condition of the tip. When the matter was referred to the foreman engineer, Mr, C. D. Molesworth, he agreed that rubbish had been scattered about but it had consisted mainly of hedge and tree clippings and had been cleared up within two hours.
