BAY RUGBY PLAYER MAKES SELECTION IN ALMANACK XV

Although no Bay of Plenty Rugby players made selection in a New Zealand team last year one for-

ward, S. McLaughlin, Opotiki, has

made the position of side row in 5 the New Zealand XV selected in • the latest issue of the Rugby Almanac. Commenting on this selection the editors state that McLaughlin is a Maori player who has still to win New Zealand Maori selection. “Tall, speedy, and a very fine allround forward, McLaughlin is a player of experience whom one would like to see tried out in better company.” In addition mention is made of E. Welch, Whakatane, “whose general all-roxlnd play remains extremely good, whilst his kicking to touch is outstanding for power and \ strength.”

Among the promising players rated by the Almanack is the Bay hooker, R. Goddard, Tauranga, who, as a newcomer to first class Rugby showed much ability. He is referTed to among the promising players and also in the section devoted to the hooker.

Another Bay of Plenty player who came under notice was J. S. Morrison, wing three-quarter from Rotorua, mentioned in the section discussing wing three-quarters. Reference is made to the outstanding record of the veteran Maori player S. T. (Tori) Reid, Hawkes Bay, who has played 157 first class matches. He is still playing top class Rugby this season. Each section of the Almanack is, as usual, chock full of information and provides an outstanding reference for the 1949 season. A full section is devoted to the Bay of Plenty Union.
