School Term Ends / . The first term for schools in t-he Bay of Plenty will conclude today for a fortnight’s holiday. Schools will be resumed again on May 23.
Y.F.C. Members There are 188 active members in Young Farmers’ Clubs kom eight clubs in the Eastern Bay of Plenty district. Red Cross Week Red Cross Week, in honour of the founder of the Society, is to be inaugurated by church services at Whakatane on Sunday. It is hoped that Red Cross members will attend the services at their churches on this occasion. Card Evening There was a good crowd at the progressive 500 card evening at the Whakatane Druids Lodge. Winners: Women, Mrs J. Chisholme; men, D. Cruse. Booby prizes, women, Mrs C. Loane; men, Mr J. Chisholm. .
Rifle Club Shoots
Judging by the number of new members enrolled by the Whakatane Legion Miniature Rifle Club shoot last week a large crowd is expected to 'attend next Tuesday evening. It is not yet definite whether any challenge shoots will be shot.
First Country Club The first of the archery clubs in the country districts adjoining Whakatane made a start last week when the Otakiri Club got under way with field day. It is expected that this club will soon be well established. Other country districts are understood to be planning clubs. » Teaching Appointments
Two teaching appointments have been approved by the Auckland Education Board to schools in the Whakatane district. Miss C. Syverston has been appointed senior assistant mistress to the Whakatane Primary School. Mr T. A. Hatta has been appointed head teacher of the Otakiri Primary School.
Demand For Spectacles The demand for spectacles in New Zealand was a little higher than the average in, most European countries, but not as high as in the United States and Great Britain, said Mr M. Mostyn-Brown, a representative of a well-known New York absorbtive lens company.. In the United. States people had for years been made “sight conscious” by advertising by an organisation sponsored by the industry.
Health Activities An assufdnce of successful treatment to those people who suffer with rheumatics ; and kindred ailments is given by Mr H. Cowan, formerly of Waihi, who hopes to open an “Institute of Good Health” at Whakatane on Monday. Mr Cowan will establish his institute in the band room in Francis Street. For many years Mr Cowan practised at Waihi where, he states, his activities for many years were most successful and widely known. P.B.A.
Rangitaiki Rainfall There was a particularly steady fall of rain recorded on the Rangitaiki Plains during April. For the whole month 5.79 inches fell, the heaviest fall being 3.37 inches on April 11. This brings the total fall on the Plains for the first four months of this year up to 12.77 inches. The average fall for April over the last 10 years has been 4.71 inches and the average for the first four months over the last 10 years 17.47 inches.
