STRENGTH OF BEER

Sir, —A paragraph entitled “Strength of Beer” which appeared in your last issue has, no doubt, considerable local interest. According to the director of the National Council of the Licensed Trade, it was unlikely that there would be any change in the strength of New Zealand beer for a long time. Presumably he refers to the issue of draught beer through hotels—but this does not apply to at least one brewery, which is outside the Association.

As the booking agent for this particular brewery, I can state emphatically that this firm has made the effort for the continuous production of a full malted bitter ale, brewed to pre-war strength, which Reminds one of what beer used to taste like “in the good old days”, and it is approximately 30 to 40 per cent stronger than their standard brands.

Yours etc., p.p. Bay of Plenty Wine Co., S. G. HIRST. Whakatane, May 2.
