CABINET APPROVAL AWAITED FOR NEW PRIMARY SCHOOLS

The establishment of two new primary schools, Whakatane v Central and Whakatane South, have been approved by the Auckland Education Board but Cabinet approval is now awaited the chairman of the Whakatane Primary School Committee, Mr L. D.' Lovelock, said in his report presented to the annual meeting of householders at Whakatane on Wednesday night. In addition similar approval for a teachers’ hostel was also being awaited. Referring to teachers’ accommodation Mr Lovelock said that application had been made for an allocation of State rental houses to teachers.

Although his committee had been responsible for the management of both the Primary and SecondarySchools, the incoming committee will be a primary school committee only, «nd therefore, this'report was confined mainly to the activities of the committee in relation to the primary school, Mr Lovelock added.

During the year the following matters had been dealt with:—

Engineex-ing Workshop: The Education Board’s approval to the conversion of shelter sheds to form part of the building of the workshop was acted upon. The Te Haehaenga School: Owing to the acute shortage of school room space at the Infant School and the Education Board’s inability to assist, the members of the committee together with a band of helpers, dismantled the Te Haehaenga school room and re-erected the building on the Infant School grounds. The committee greatly appreciated the assistance given to it by local carpenters and other helpers. Tennis Courts: The fence surrounding the tennis courts renewed.

Playing Areas: The grounds in front of both the Primary and Secondary School ploughed, levelled and sown down in grass. Bandroom: On an undertaking by the Education Board to provide prefabricated huts, it was decided to relinquish the bandroom. 1
