St George’s Day Observed On Sunday
Sunday, April 23, is Saint George’s Day, the day on which both eastern and western churches mark his death. Although _ better known as the tutelary saint of England he is also the patron of chivalry but to the New Zealand schoolboy he is better known as the man who fought and killed the dragon and rescued a captive princess. /
His history is very obscure. Most acounts of his life contain more legendary myth than historic fact but it is believed that he was a distinguished soldier and the son of noble Christian parents in Cappadocia. He was tortured and put to death at Nicomedia on April 23, 303.
