MATATVA LANDING ANNIVERSARY TO BE CELEBRATED
Plans to celebrate the six hundredth anniversary of the arrival of the Matatua canoe to Whakatane are now being prepared by tribes of the Matatua Maori district. This was the result of a meeting of tribal elders held at the Wairaka Pa, Whakatane, when it was decided to hold the celebrations on September 22 of this year at the Wairaka Pa, which is the spot where the canoe is believed to have landed in 1350 A.D.
It is proposed to form a committee to organise the celebrations and to prepare for the 2000 to 3000 people who are expected to attend. An executive has already been formed to make preliminary investigations. ' Representatives from the Whakatane Borough and County Councils are to be invited to the next meeting of the executive, which is to be held at the Wairaka Pa on April 28. ,
