Fire Hazard Created By Burning Paper

The fire hazard created by some business firms who adopted the practice of burning paper on the river bank behind the northern business area was emphasised at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. Councillor H. G. Warren said that some day there was going to be a serious fire.

“I used to burn paper there but now I have stopped and I feel quite virtuous,” he said. Cr R. T. Morpeth said that although he did not feel virtuous like Cr Warren he knew the fires were really a very serious matter. He urged that something should be done about the problem now.

The question was referred to the Works Committee.
