Slip Blocks Road In Waimana Gorge

Although a fairly extensive slip in the Waimana Gorge blocked the main Whakatane-Opotiki highway for a short period yesterday workmen of the Works Department soon had the road open to traffic again. The slip occurred about 1 a.m. and completely covered the road, stopping all traffic from using that route. Many travellers made a detour by way of the Ohope-Wainui back road, which was also used by the early morning Road Services bus.

The slip was still being cleared this morning although the road was opened again to traffic early yesterday.
