WHAKATANE ROD & GUN CLUB HAS A SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Although the matter of live bird traps was followed up by the committee nothing -has been done because of the existence of a strong opinion as to the stand which is likely to be taken by the Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals stated the president, Mr J. D. Rivett, in his report presented to the annual meeting of the Whakatane County Rod and Gun Club. The committee had also worked on the possibility of skeet shooting and plans were now being made to prepare the grounds next year. Mr Rivett said the year had been largely one of experimental development for the Club and although there had been some disappointments he thought that with the experience gained the club should now be able to consolidate and expand. The question of covering all sporting events in the district by the formation of a Bay of Plenty Association was mentioned by the president but arrangements had y-3t to be finalised. He thought that such an organisation would be of enormous benefit to sportsmen in the Bay.

Referring to the standard of shooting Mr Rivett said that in his opinion the standard had improved very considerably over the past few years as a direct result of the club’s activities. “In fact I think I would be correct in saying that ~it is now at the highest level it has ever been in the Bay,” he added.

One function that had marred the year’s activities was the annual smoko, which had not been a success. The attendance had been very poor while the supply of game had not been in keeping with the splendid amount of game in the district. He expresed the hope that future gatherings would be more successful.

Concluding his report Mr Rivett appealed to members to rally round and give the club their fullest support in wiping off existing liabilities. He urged them to keep putting forward new ideas and suggestions and to take a keen and live interest in the activities of the clubs’
