High School Has Good Cricket Win Over P. And T. Team
Showing the effects of good, coaching by Mr H. Craig, the Whakatane Boys’ High defeated a P. • and T. eleven in a recent return game and evened the score. School won by 36 runs on the first innings. P. and T. were without the services of two or three leading players but this did not detract
from the merit of school’s win. A feature of school’s first innings score of 143 was a splendid second wicket partnership of 58 by T, Liyons (45) and J. Fitzsimmons (15). M. Gillard 21, P. Blake 10, H. Ross 15, Morice 10, also batted well. Bowling for P. and T., R. Jones 3 for 17 off 8 overs and B. Whittaker 2 for 18 off 9 overs and L. Goodall 2 for 27.
P. and T.’s 107 was largely the effort of a 33 by F. Witcher, B. Whiteside 17, Kelly 16,. D .McKenzie 11. Witcher and Whiteside 36 for the third wicket was the best partnership of the innings. For school J. Howard secured 4 for 8 including the hat trick. T. Lyons got 3 for 29, P. Howard 2 for 15. Batting a second time school collapsed and had lost 8 wickets for 50 at stumps, Peter Blake 10, M. Gillard 10 not out. In the bowling McKenzie 3 for 5, W. R. Whiteside 2 for 10, W. D. Rivett 2 for 11 received the wickets.
This was school’s largest score for several seasons and shows what can, be done by regular coaching. It would be great assistance for local cricket if the school could field a regular side in the competitions next year.
