TWO MINOR PLACINGS AT TAURANGA (By “Spike”)
On Easter Monday a team of 17 athletes of the Whakatane Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club competed at the open meeting at Tauranga, and while not annexing many trophies, the benefit gained by these young competitors in the open company, was of infinite value. The club was never disgraced in any department of the proceedings and with the knowledge gained not only by the competitors but also the officials, the club can look forward to next season with high hopes for greater successes.
Congratulations must go to those who did gain places both in the finals and in the heats, especially to young Maureen Campbell who was successful in running a very close third to Miss Parker and Miss Dowman in the 220 yards. This was a notable achievement. To Jim Chadwick, the other finalist who gained third place, in the men’s 880 yards for one who has just emerged from junior company it was a very fine effort. A special word of praise must go to the two cyclists, who although not placed closer than fifth in any event, rode exceedingly well, considering that they were up against such class performers as the N.Z. Empire Games representatives.
Tomorrow the club is holding its final meeting for the season, and a full muster of all athletes is wanted and a good attendance of the public would be much appreciated by the committee.
