Women’s Institute Birthday Held At Galatea
A very enjoyable afternoon was held in the Galatea School on Saturday when the Galatea Women’s Institute celebrated another birthday. Mesdames L. and H. Goodhue opened the entertainment by singing two duets after which the two Judd brothers sang “Blue Smoke” and “Now is the Hour” as very pleasing 'soprano duets. A humorous competition of eating a biscuit and whistling a tune provided much entertainment for the members present not taking part. During a break in the entertainment Mrs Black, the new president, presented bouquets to the retiring president, Mrs Nicholls, and the retiring secretary, Mrs MacDonald. Visitors from Murupara, Mrs Gibbs and Mrs Wilson, also received sprays. The guest of honour, Mrs McCallion, President of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of Women’s Institutes, was presented with a spray and in her expression of thanks gave a short the W.I. as a whole and a brief resume of the birth of this movement.
After the presentations the entertainment was continued starting with a Quiz competition in which Galatea beat Murupara and Mrs McCallion was the winner amongst the visitors. Mrs MacDonald sang ‘‘Birds Songs at Eventide” in a very pleasing manner and followed this with a chorus song. A highly amusing sketch “Charlie Is My Darling” was presented by Mesdames Paton and MacDonald.
