MORE OF WHAKATANE

Sir, —It is a pity that your correspondent “Night Worker’’ chose the nom de plume he did because it gives an odour of facetiGusness to a very serious matter. When one comes to think of it, Whakatane is not a go ahead town. As an instance, a few months ago a considered proposal was put forward by the Chamber of Commerce in the direction of raising funds to erect a swimming bath This proposal was to be referred t) the Mayor to call a public meeting to further the idea. At that stage the proposition seems to have died. Both Te Puke and Matamata have excellent baths and why shouldn’t Whakatane have one? Whakatane may be backward in some respects but at least we seem to have an excellent crematorium, guaranteed to kill any new ideas.

Yours etc., “SINK OR SWIM”

Sir,—lt seems a great pity that a scribber, apparently a newcomer to the place, is prepared to rush into print in criticism of our town

it is very clear that the majority of ratepayers are content with tha state of the town as it is. The proof of this is that there hasn't been an election for Mayor, as far as I can remember, for twenty odd years. If ratepayers were dissat-sned there would have been competition for this position.

There may have been a bit of sickness about, but it has never been proved that it was due to bad water or poor sanitation. Incidentally there is a plot of flowers near the Rock. It is to be hoped that the next Mayor will again be elected unopposed to save expense or threatened changes, and that people like “Night Worker” will not unsettle the town and finish :, p by having the rates increased. Yours etc.,

“SATISFIED”
