PROBATION FOR ATTEMPTED SUICIDE CHARGE
Order for suppression of the name of an Onepu farmer charged with attempted suicide on March 25 was made by Mr E. ,L- Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Accused was convicted and admitted to probation for 12 months, with the special condition that firearms be surrendered to the police.
Accused had come home on March 25 at his home at Onepu and his wife and family were absent because they knew of his drunken state, said senior sergeant F. M. Fuller. Accused had then taken a shot gun and swaggered about threatening to commit suicide. He had fired a shot but did not injure l:imself and had later come back to the house, loaded the gun and held it to his head but did not fire it. However, he had gone further than words.
Appearing for accused Mr Otley said accused was a fine man when not drunk. He had not injured himself in any way and had apparently made these suicide threats after coming home in a maudlin state and finding his wife and family absent. He agreed with the senior sergeant that how far accused would have gone was only a matter of conjecture.
