WAIM AN A WAR MEMORIAL GALA DAY WAS OUTSTANDING SUCCESS: DREW LARGE CROWD AND RECORD ENTRIES
The Gala Day, arranged by the Waimana War Memorial Committee and held on the Waimana Domain on Saturday was one of the finest functions yet held in the district. The weather was ideal and the gate takings exceeded expectations, visitors and competitors coming from all parts of the Whakatane and Opotiki Counties.
There were record entries in the horse events, which were judged by Mr J. Pattie, Pukehina, jumping, and Mr ’G. Leggett, Opotiki, ring events. Competition in the athletics was especially keen and a large number of entries were received in each event. Th sheep dog trials, the dogs penning ducks, created much interest, and of the 11 entries Mr Eggleton’s dog, Dick, carried off the honours with Mr McMillan’s Yeoman second. The car events also' created interest, and amusement of the variety of vehicles entered. Numerous side shows and games arranged by the committee, helped the funds considerably. A feature of the day was the happy and sporting attitude of competitors and it was very gratifying to the committee, who had worked so hard preparing the grounds and arranging the programme, to find this spirit present. The Highland Dancing, judged by Mrs Connell, of Hamilton, drew over 130 entries and the music was supplied by the Whakatane Calecxnian Band, .with Mr K. Fergusson in charge. The committee wishes to acknow-
ledge with thanks the assistance
given by the Traffic Officers, Mr A. ■Carling and Mr D. Bridges and the
uniformed members of the*Whaka~tane St John Ambulance Brigade.
