COUNCIL SUPPORTS EDGECUMBE TRUST HOTEL PROPOSAL
Should a representative public meeting, which is to be called next week at Edgecumbe, agree to the proposal to support a trust hotel at Edgecumbe the Whakatane County Council is going to apply for the new publican’s license recently granted the township for a trustcontrolled hotel. This decision was reached at the monthly meeting of the Council yesterday. However the Council has made it quite clear that it will not shoulder any of the financial responsibility nor will bear any of the expenses which may be entailed in applying for a license.
The matter was first raised by the Edgecumbe Progressive Association which waited on the Finance Committee last week.
Cr L. Luxton pointed out that the license was for a two star hotel and the estimated cost to construct such a building would be from £30,000 to £40,000. There was going to be a lot of money needed to finance it. Edgecumbe was going to get an hotel anyway and he thought the Council should support any move to provide decent drinking facilities, Cr R. FXWardlaw, declared. He would hate to see a hotel built that was run like some that were privately owned.
“I would favour a trust hotel,” he added.
' Other councillors agreed and the proposal was left until the outcome of the public meeting was known.
