N.Z. CHAMPION IS DEFEATED AT EDGECUMBE CHOPS

The appearance of the New Zealand champion, J. Murray, Mananui, was one of the attractions to the annual sports meeting of the Rangitaiki Axemen’s Association held at Edgecumbe on Saturday. He attracted a large crowd to the 14 inch open Rangitaiki Provincial handicap chop for the George Syme Cup, the event in which he participated, but in a thrilling finish he was beaten for first place by T. Wynard, Taumarunui. The Te Teko axeman, I. Dunster, was third. A large crowd attended the sports in fine weather and supported the stalls and various sporting events. Beside the chopping, which attracted entries from all over the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and King Country, spectators were able to watch the first knockout hockey competition of the year. There were 22 teams participating.

The baby show attracted large entries ,and excited a great amount of interest. Taking it all round the meeting was considered to have been the best and most successful yet held. During the day several of the chopping events were broadcast through the Bay of Plenty station IYZ. Results of chopping:—

12 inch Bay of Plenty Provincial Handicap for D. Hawken Cup (£4O, £2O, £5, £2 10s). Ist heat, O. Belk (Te Kuiti) 1, I. Dunster (Te Teko) 2, D. A. Honeck (Mangapihi) 3. 28secs; 2nd heat, R. Wardj (Manawahe) 1, J. Wynard (Taumaruni) 2, M. Broughton (Rotorua) 3. 26secs; final, Broughton 1, Ward 2, Belk 3, Honeck 4. 12 inch Extended Limit Handicap (£ls, £7 10s, £2 ,10s). Ist heat, W. Reid (Manawahe) 1, Broughton 2, Belk 3; 2nd heat, J. McCormick (Paeroa) 1, J. Stephens (Manawahe) 2, A. Luxford (Rotorua) 3; final, Reid 1, McCormick 2, Luxford 3. 30 l/ssecs.
