Vehicle Counter Records Road Traffic Density

A new vehicle counter, imported from America for the Transport Department has been on trial on New Zealand roads. The counter can deal with up to 900 vehicles a minute. It records the number of vehicles counted every 15 minutes so that the traffic flow at any hour of the day can be noted without actually reading the instrument at the time.

The counter is only the second of the type in use in New Zealand. The department has had a locallymade one in use for some time. Some local bodies have counters which record totals but do not show the density of traffic at any particular time.

The new counter will be used throughout New Zealnd to obtain traffic flow data on-important roads.
