FAST TIMES AND CLOSE RACING
HIGH COMPETITION AT ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
A fine performance by L. Armstrong in winning the boys’ senior 100 yards in 10.8 seconds and' an 18 feet 8£ inches leap by J. Wilson to give him the boys’ intermediate broad jump were two of the outstanding features of the first annual athletic sports of the Whakatane High School held at the Domain on Friday. Another notable individual 'effort was that of Maureen Campbell who won the girls’ intermediate 75 yards in the very fast time of 9.1 seconds.
There was a good crowd of spectators during the afternoon and the weather held fine.
In all events competition was keen while the standard of many individual performances was very good. Because of the large number of entries heats had- to be run on Thursday. The individual championships brought forth some very closely •contested racing and only in the in-
termediate girls was there a clear
cut lead, the winner, M. Campbell, scoring 23 points and the second
placer, L. Moon, eight. The senior championship was won by S. Brif-
fault, 18 pbints with B. Mihaka, 16
.second. D. Learning took the junior with nine points while M. Tamahou and M. Raureti wsre second equal with eight each. • The boys’ senior championship developed into a keen tussle between H. Watarawi and T, Lyon, the former finally winning by 26 points to 24. The intermediate championship went to M. Morice with 18 points with H. Hodges and J. Wilson sec-
ond equa, each scoring 15 points. 13. Lumsden had a good win in the junior championship and' gained 19 points to take the totle, B. Fabish was second, 12 points, and C. Hammond was third with 11.
• From these sports a team is to be selected to represent the school at the Bay of Plenty secondary schools’ athletic championship to be held at Tauranga on Saturday.
