Girls' Marching

UNITED HAS FIRST WIN AT OPOTIKI

Giving their best display since the team was formed late last year the Whakatane United Girls' Marching team had a most successful day at the Opotiki Girls' Marching and Band Competitions at Opotiki on Saturday when they gained two first placings and two thirds. This result was all the more creditable as the team competed against seven other teams, some very much more experienced, from centres throughout the Bay of 'Plenty and Gisborne. ,

Whakatane was placed first in the Novice class and now goes into competition in the open class. The other first place was in the best leader section, this being awarded to L. Butler, Whakatane leader. The third placings gained were in the costumes and street march sections.

COXSWAINES' SUCCESS

Much of the success of the Whakatane Rowing Club's crews at the Auckland Rowing Championships at Mercer on Saturday was due in no little part to fine work by the coxswaines, P. Lynds and T. Flay. They worked with the crews and the valuable experience gained at recent regattas was obvious on the day. N. Reid was loaned by the Club to Tauranga and he steered this crew to an exciting third inj the senior fours. All coxswaines attended the championships for future regatta experience.
