NEW WATER PUMP EXPECTED READY NEXT WEEK
With the expected completion next week of the installation of the new pumping plant at the water station the first step in the Whakatane Borough Council's new water works scheme will have been taken and Whakatane will have a more reliable water supply. This new large pump will greatly ease the load being the already overworked pumps now in use and will also ensure a continuous? supply of water in the event of one of the pumps breaking down. Workmen have been engaged installing the pumps for the' past few weeks but work has been delayed by the non-arrival of special piping. These have now come to hand and the borough electrical engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, expects to have the first run out of the pumps some time near the end of this week. This will be the first part of Whakatane's new water works scheme. The second step will be the construction of the reservoir and two new delivery pipes. A tender for this work has already been let and these are expected to be completed and working by next summer.
Mr Lysaght said that with the new reservoir the present water storage would be trebled while the new delivery pipes meant a double supply of water, as both pumps would be able to be brought into operation at the same time. When this was accomplished Whakatane's supply of water would be able to satisfy all needs. However, he pointed out that this work would probably take all the winter and then the filters and flocculation plant would have to be completed.
