New Spray Quickens Ripening Of Apples

A chemical spray developed recently speeds up the ripening of apples by as much as a month, the Department of Agriculture reports. It is called 2, 4-s—trichlorophenox-yacetic acid (2,4, 5-T). The Department’s plant scientists reveal that its application has hastened the ripening of nine varieties of apples on which it has been tested to date.

A surprising result of 2, 4. 5-T spraying is thab it makes the fruit cling tenaciously to the trees, the scientists report. Sprayed apples failed "to drop even after the fleshy parts had decayed and fallen away.
