CANOEISTS SEE FINE SCENERY ON WHAKATANE RIVER

By canoe from Taneatua to Whakatane was the unusual transport adopted by Messrs' B. McGougan and I. Moore, of Taneatua, to come down the Whakatane River on Sunday. Taking about four hours to travel the 18 miles the two did not have to get out of their 14 foot canoe once.

Most of the journey was done in calm water but near the Whakatane traffic bridge the incoming tide and a stiff breeze whipped up the water and made paddling hard work. In one or two places rapids provided some excitement but for the most part the travellers were able to admire the fine scenery, scenery they never knew existed so close to their homes.

Although this was a start Messrs McGougan and MJoore have more ambitious plans. Their next river trip will be down the Waimana River, shootings some of the really rough rapids. They don’t expect to reach Taneatua in their canoe but “it will be good fun whil§ it lasts.”
