Local & General
Local Body Picnic The annual picnic of local body representatives at Whakatane was held on Friday on the Whakatane Harbour Board launch to Whale Island. Some of the party landed on the Island and other members went on to the fishing grounds.
Ohope Memorial Hall A request from an Ohope resident that the Council finance a memorial hall at Ohope was declined by the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council. It was felt that the plan for the development of Ohope and the footpaths question was more important to the area at the present time.
Peanut Crop Grown Peanuts are being grown with excellent results by Mr E. J. Krippner, of Te Rore, Te Awamutu. Mr Krippner has had several years’ experience with a peanut crop, which this year promises to be exceptionally good. Peanuts were grown successfully by Mr H. Hardcastle at Rotorua some years ago.
Jersey Cow’s Output A Jersey cow has broken the world record for daily milk production for the breed, giving 120|lb in 24 hours. The previous record was 9621 b. The cow, named Moor’s Pacified Diana, is seven years old and is owned by Professor R. W. Wheldon, Dean of Agriculture at Durham University..
Everything Considered The suggestion of an old resident of the district that Otarawairere Bay should be developed as a deep sea port for the Bay of Plenty produced little comment from the chairman of the Whakatane Harbour Board when the question was referred to him. He pointed out that everything “had been considered.” Snake Identified
The black and yellow snake which was found at Ohope on Thursday has now been identified as a yel-low-bellied sea snake. They are rarely seen in New Zealand waters and although venomous by the time they reach this country they are so far from their natural home that they would be of little danger.
