UNITED RETAINS CUP FROM P. & T.
A definite superiority in both batting and bowling enabled United* to defeat P. an T. by an innings and 48 runs and so retain the Williams Cup in a challenge cricket match at Whakatane on Saturday. A fine bowling performap.ce was put on by W. McKenzie who took six for 29 and six for 19 against P. and T. For the latter team J. Rivett bowled a useful four wickets for 47 runs. Details:— United 165 (M. Le Pine 63, F. Cameron 24; J. Rivett 4 for 47) beat P. and T. 66 (W. J. McKenzie 6 for 29, M. Le Pine 4 for 3) and 51 (F. Paton 21; W. J. McKenzie 6 for 19). WIN FOR EDGECUMBE In a closely contested cricket match for the Collins Shield Edgecumbe defeated Waimana on the first innings at Edgecumbe yesterday. Details:— Edgecumbe 135 (Elliott 39, E. W. Tunnicliffe 21, Thurlow 19; Grant 4 for 48, Wilson 4 for 27) and 80 for 4 (Elliott 21, McGee 25 retired) beat Waimana 120 (Grant 45, Stirling 18; Thurlow 6 for 48, Watson 3 for 43).
