DUST NUISANCE IN COUNTY CAUSES COUNCIL CONCERN
The serious nuisance now being created by dust from roads throughout the County was mentioned by councillors at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council and following the ensuing discussion it was decided to instruct the engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, to find the cost of sealing in front of shops, schools and township shops throughout the County. One case where the dust was a nuisance was at the Otakiri < school Cr R. C. Leslie said. He thought some priority should be given schools and country food stores as well as the built up areas. At the Otakiri school the dust was a definite nuisance through the summer. At present a dental clinic was being planned but the road would need to be sealed first to stay th£ dust.
The chairman, Mr J. .L Burnett, agreed that the dust nuisance was one of the worst curses in New Zealand. But to do away with it entirely in the county would probably mean that every road would have to be sealed. He suggested that the smaller jobs should be investigated first. Cr W. Hunter said that one of the worst cases in the county was on the road from Edgecumbe v to the Otakiri turn-off.
Cr W. M. Clark protested that the road at Ohope was equally as bad.
