Was Large Fire At Ohiwa Started Deliberately?

A large fire in dry bracken and other scrub which caught alight at Ohiwa Harbour late Sunday morning finally burned itself out yesterday. Believed to have been started deliberately in three different places the fire was soon burning fiercely on Sunday and sent a great cloud of stnoke over the harbour.

The county engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, said yesterday that people had been sefen lighting the fire and the question had been referred to the police, who were making inquiries. The fire burned out a large area between the harbour and the sea just east of Jim’s Camp. No damage was done to that property. Yesterday workmen of the Whakatane County Council constructed a large fire break and started burning back against the main blaze. Workmen were making a final check of the area this morning.
